Quotes, February’19 – March’19

1.

We all are bleeding in the fight

We all are fighting tirelessly.

The pity is:

We are all fighting the wrong battle.

The wounds are there.

The blood is there.

The sweat is there.

The tiredness is there.

The battle is wrong.

2.

Conserve your energy,

Train your thoughts,

Discipline your little self.

Time is precious, attention is precious.

To waste time, it is not necessary that you must do something wasteful.

It is enough to just worry.

3.

Humbly go

to the root of the mistake,

without feeling ashamed,

without a great self-image.

Look at yourself laughing,

as one looks at a joker,

laughing

at his own jokes.

Now you see

the mother mistake.

Seriousness is the mother mistake.

Don’t take yourself so seriously!

4.

This is happening, that is happening…

But whatsoever is happening is not big enough to trouble you.

That is Samadhi.

5.

Beware the man who thinks he understands.

6.

There is nothing called

self-purification

and self-improvement.

There is only one I,

and it cannot be improved upon.

And even if the false I gets improved,

only the false benefits.

How do you get better

by decorating your shadow?

Don’t improve the false,

just disown it.

7.

Was the thing the same before you perceived it?

If yes, why does the thing appear different every time you see it?

Was there a thing at all before you perceived it?

8.

Is spontaneity wonderful?

The spontaneous utterance of a sage is musical,

The spontaneous utterance of a fool is abusive.

Like everything else in life, the value of a thing or action depends squarely on where it is coming from.

9.

If you love, you want to help.

If you want to help, you will have to more clearly know the one who needs to be helped.

When you clearly know the one you want to help, there arises disgust.

That’s the challenge of love: to keep loving the one who provokes revulsion in you.

10.

Isn’t it a spell?

When you are out of it, doesn’t it all look clearly stupid?

Don’t you then curse yourself for being so blindly spellbound?

Obviously stupid it looks, but only after you’re out of it.

Why make basic freedom distant by giving it a fancy name like enlightenment?

11.

When you know

what is going on, then

you are liberated from that which is going on.

12.

It is not given to me to lie still.

The only way to see me still

is to match pace with me.

13.

The Truly spiritual man

is young in action,

and eternally old in realisation.

At the centre,

he is completely still,

like Shiva in mystical stillness.

At the periphery,

he is a lover and a fighter,

like Shiva in existential dance.

14.

What is commitment?

If I am not fit to get what I want,

then it is the ‘I’ that must yield, adjust, disappear.

The want cannot be compromised with. The want must, and will, remain.

It is the want that will shape, discipline and dissolve the I.

Commitment, Devotion, Surrender.

15.

When You are gone, then nothing matters. Body sans Heart.

When You are here, then nothing matters.

We then just casually play.

Will it matter if we win?

Well, not much.

Will it matter if we lose?

Well, not much.

The game is not meant to be won, it is meant to be played. Together.

16.

To touch

without leaving your fingerprints

– That’s the mark of

the shrewd criminal,

or the wisest saint.

17.

When you are one with the object of your consciousness, then there is just one entity, neither you nor the world. Both you and the world disappear.

This disappearance is the end of duality and end of consciousness.

A lightness free of consciousness remains, and this is awareness.

18.

If you find yourself stuck with suffering, ask: Is suffering sticking to me? Or am I sticking to suffering?

One sticks to suffering by sticking to the same breakfast, same friends, same cap, same habits.

When everything in life is being kept the same, how can life itself change?

19.

Just reading the Guru helps little.

You’ve to be near.

Physically as you live, you’ve to be physically near.

Even being within the seeing range of the Guru won’t help.

You’ve to be within smelling range of the Guru.

Actually, you’ve to be within slapping range of the Guru.

20.

We have a tremendous potential to suffer and a tremendous resistance to call our situation as suffering.

We name our situation as ambition, hope, desire, duty, passion, love, but never give it the right name:suffering.

We laugh aloud among others, and suffer quietly in our loneliness

21.

Even when you are totally drenched in melancholy,

You are able to cry only because you are still healthy.

22.

The best gift you can give to others is your own freedom.

Quotes, April’19

1.

If you want to most definitely reach,

Take the most difficult route.

2.

What is It?

More than everything, in general.

Less than nothing, in particular.

3.

If your lover speaks to you in a language you cannot comprehend,

does your love diminish?

No.

You may not comprehend his words, but still, you do understand.

What do you understand ?

Nothing in particular.

Not everything has to be intellectually comprehended.

Love is enough.

4.

Freedom is the backdrop in which bondage appears as bondage.

Freedom is the Light in which darkness looks like darkness.

If there is only darkness, there is no darkness.

Darkness means anything only in the presence of Light.

To not to feel bondage is to not to be in Freedom.

5.

Grace is available to you unconditionally, but not compulsorily.

She would come to your doorstep, and knock.

She will wait, not break open your door.

Answer the knock quickly,or the knock keeps getting dimmer and infrequent.

She isn’t short of patience, but you’re short of time.

6.

Those who are winning the war, matter.

They need to be saluted.

Those who are losing the war, matter.

They need to be helped.

Those who are absentees from battlefield, do not matter.

They need to be ignored.

7.

What you collect for your security makes you all the more insecure.

8.

Except for Prakriti,

who will tell you

of all the stories of

Parmatma?

And, well,

all his secrets?

9.

What does it mean to say “God is One? Truth is One?”

It simply means: Do not allow the many to lord over your mind. The world is many things. The world is many thoughts, moods, emotions, ideologies, objects, relationships.

Do not let these turn into your gods.

10.

The lover, the mystic, looks at the moon

and knows fullness itself.

Is the material just material?

A thing is the Source behind itself.

It appears as a thing only because you watch as something.

Watch as nothing,

and the thing reveals itself as it’s own genesis.

Why falsely satisfied with the personal?

Why falsely satisfied with the personal

Question: Acharya ji, many times of the day, there may be happiness in the background, but if any sad event happens, then it takes more time to recover to my normal, common state.

Why is it so?

Acharya Prashant ji: Don’t give yourself so much time. The Satan was once asked, “When you want to fool people, what do you tell them?” He replies, “I whisper in their ears, “Your time is, ‘your’ time.” Why do you have so much of personal time? Why do you have free time at all? Free-time, is the most un-free time.

Why is your time not committed, not dedicated to a higher purpose?

If you will have free time, what will you do? You will only use that time to destroy yourself.

Your time must be a something, that you are merely a trustee of.

When you are a trustee of something, then you don’t own it. Then you just look after it. You maintain it, you keep it.

You don’t possess it, you don’t utilize it.

And even if you utilize it, you utilize it for a goal that is not your personal goal. Why do you utilize your time for your personal goals? That’s bad, and that’s why you are punished.

Question: Acharya ji, for e.g. if a death happens in my neighborhood, I come to normalcy sooner or later. But if a death happens in my family, it takes me longer time to recover. Why is it so?

Acharya ji: What if the death happens in your family, and at the same time, an earthquake strikes the entire country. Would you still have time to ponder over that solitary death? Why don’t you have a higher purpose?

Why don’t you see that an earthquake is constantly hitting us? There is a constant upheaval. Nobody is centered, or peacefully situated. All are in turmoil. All living beings are passing through the harrowing cycle of life and death.

How can you then allow yourself to be perturbed by a solitary death? Tell me. Why do you have only personal considerations in mind? What does one death in my neighborhood mean, in the context of the billion animals that are being slaughtered every day? Why don’t you have a perspective? Why don’t you have a bigger picture available to you? Even as you are grieving over the one death, in let’s say your cousin’s family, a billion goats, rabbits, lambs, fish, cows, camels, and off-course chicken, have been slaughtered even as the tear-drop rolls down your eyes, to your chin.

In the time, that it takes the tear-drop to roll down, from your eye, to your chin, millions of living beings have been slaughtered, and you are grieving over the one personal relationship you had. How noble is that? How are you available to grief?

Listener: But, ultimately it is true.

Acharya ji: It is not true, till it is true for you.

Question: Acharya ji, why does it happen, that I worry only about something bad happening to me?

Acharya ji: Your consciousness is too self-centred. It needs expansion, it needs sublimation.

Listener: My daily life rotates around only certain aspects.

Acharya ji: Change the daily life. Give it up. That’s why you have been called here. Why must you preserve this thing called ‘daily life’? I invite you to begin afresh. Why is there such sacredness around your personal life? What is really sacred about this thing called ‘personal life’, ‘personal time’, ‘personal relationships’? I tell you, given a chance, you will want to give all that up.

Given a chance to really re-live your life, you will never want to live the same way you have done. Even the most self-assured person, would want to greatly amend his life, if allowed a chance to begin again. Is it not true?

Publicly you may claim, that you would want to again live the same life, if you get a chance. Inside you know, that is not the case. Nobody is contended.

Why attach some, or great sacredness, to the thing that you are already not satisfied with. Don’t you see a gross contradiction? We live in perpetual flux of desires. What does that mean? We are not contended. Do you see that? Do you see that?

And on the other hand, we attach the great sanctity to our personal life. Now, on one hand, you are not at all contended with your state. On the other hand, you treat it as some divine absolute – unchangeable and perfect.  Isn’t it contradictory? Isn’t it self-destructive?

Please!

I will put it in simpler words. On one hand, you are not at all satisfied with your state of affairs, are you? On the other hand, you do not want to touch a lot of things in your life, as if they are absolutely the Truth – not touchable, not changeable. C’mon, be prepared to discard all that. All ‘this’.

Question: Acharya ji, I am now realising that one should have a larger perspective towards life. Our life should not be limited only to one’s family and locality. Am I right?

Acharya ji: Obviously a larger perspective, obviously. But you have to differentiate between your personal capacity, for action, your personal, physical, limited energy, and the possibility o infinite realization.

One very well knows that hunger is widespread. That must be known. One has  a capacity for global consciousness, or is that capacity not available? But that does not mean that you will simultaneously have the capacity to globally eradicate hunger. These two must go hand-in-hand.

On one hand you must have sympathy, rather close empathy for all the animals being mis-treated, ill-treated, exploited. On the other hand, you very well know that you cannot go to Africa or Canada and prevent all the exploitation that is happening there. But what is it that you can do? You can at least protect animals in your vicinity.

And these two must go hand-in-hand – a universal consciousness, and local action.

You cannot say that because I cat locally, so my consciousness is also local.

No!

Because if your consciousness is local, then your entire person-hood will become very-very local.

You will become, in simple words, very-very narrow-minded.

Does spirituality enable one to predict the future? (Clairvoyance) || Acharya Prashant (2018)

Does spirituality help predict the future

Question: Acharya ji, does spirituality enable one to predict the future?

Acharya Prashant: In this issue, there is no jewel, and no hidden diamond that carries any value. Doctors predict reasonably well that this fellow has two or three months to live. In that there is application of intellect, not the promise of freedom.

And if you are watching, a thousand people die, over the course of your career, a lot many of them, fifty or hundred, will be able to, reasonably, accurately predict, how many days or weeks, they have left with them. All this is: numbers, statistics, chance. None of this, is in the ambit of spirituality.  None of this knowledge, will help you in liberation. This is sheer curiosity.

When you say that your grandfather was able to accurately predict, that he would die, ten days hence, you should also go and collect more representative data. Let me collect it right now.

Anybody sitting here, who has not ever had premonition, that he is going to die? Over the course of your life, have you ever not felt that you would not live for long? It happens. And with many people, it happens, multiple times, right? At some point or the other, you feel as if, you will die.

And obviously, all these speculations, premonitions, instincts, are proven false. In a thousand such cases, one or two, are going to be proven accurate, merely by chance. That is just statistical randomness.

So, when you quote one person as having succeeded in his speculation, you should also quote first of all, how many people failed in that speculation. Nine hundred failed, nine succeeded. Simple randomness. Don’t draw conclusions from there. And even if you draw conclusions from there, I am asking you, “How many conclusions help you with your liberation?” These things will not help you.

There is nothing of value in these things. Nothing at all! You also mentioned that your grandfather had a particular kind of shift in his consciousness, he became nice and such things.

Consciousness in itself is something, which can never be still. It is always shifting. Right now, it is still the same, as it was an hour back?

Shift – thy name is consciousness.

Consciousness – thy name is movement.

Consciousness is changing constantly, so what’s the great surprise if it changed ten days before the physical demise? It is anyway always changing.

Every piece of knowledge, or experience, or instinct, or conclusion,

causes a shift in consciousness.

So, if someone has become assured that he has only week or two, left to live, you would find his behaviour definitely changing. Obviously! You are standing outside this door, and this happens to be a doctor’s cabin. You are in a particular frame of consciousness, are you not? Now, you enter this room, and the doctor tells you that you are terminally ill, and you have only three months to live. Within five minutes, your consciousness has undergone a sea change. Has it not? You are no more the same person at all.

Outside the door, you are one person, inside the door, you are suddenly another person. One piece of knowledge, has changed your consciousness so much. So, all that is alright. My question to you, again is: does all this information, help you with your liberation? It does not. So, let’s rather come to the core questions.

The really important questions of our life, let’s come to them!

Are psychedelic drugs helpful in spirituality?

Are psycedelic drugs helpful in spirituality

Question: Recently, I came across an article on psychedelic drugs. I was surprised to know that a large part of spiritual community consumes such psychedelic drugs, and claims that it has helped them immensely to remain in a peaceful state.

I was even more surprised to find that many spiritual teachers encourage their people to take psychedelic drugs, especially LSD etc. He also mentions that Osho has once said, “So, the drug opens up a door and helps you to understand that man’s life and his experience need not be confined to the ordinary, mundane world. He can fly high towards the stars. That he is capable of knowing things which are not ordinarily available. Psychedelics  can open doors, not lead you through them.”

Acharya Prashant: When you want to be intoxicated, there is lot to be intoxicated upon.

First of all understand this: that yes the mind is eager to go beyond the daily, mundane experiences, and that’s why the seeker goes to a teacher. But, if the teacher fails in bringing the seeker to the beyond, then this is the option that the teacher has.

So, recommending the use of psychedelic drugs, in fact, just tells of the inability of the teacher, to take the seeker , beyond usual consciousness, through other means.

It’s like this, that you want samadhi(peace), and instead of that, you are given nidra(sleep). There is at least something in common between samadhi and nidra. Both are removed from your usual state of consciousness.

So, having given you nidra, now the teacher can claim that he has given you something, something that was not, usually, experience-able to you. But, is this what the seeker wanted? Instead of taking him to the higher level of consciousness, you are actually lowering his state of consciousness. You are turning him unconscious.

What will be the result? He  will definitely experience a change. But, is the change for the good? Is it a change that takes you higher? No. It’s a bad change. And if this is the route that many spiritual seekers are seeking, then this route is nothing, but a verdict upon the disciple and the teacher both. Having failed in the mission, now they are using obnoxious, useless, self-deceptive means.

Osho’s statement too here is laden with danger.  Yes, when you are under the influence of drugs, then you certainly know of one thing – that the universe is not confined to, as you see it in your usual consciousness. That is alright. That is true.

See, what do most people feel?

They feel a particular type of universe, just because they live in a particular type of consciousness.

They feel the universe, in a particular way, all the time.

So, they start taking the universe, as Truth.

After all, what is Truth? That which does not change.

So, this wall remains white and standing, and it has remained white and standing since the last twenty years. And I have been looking at it, and it has remained white and standing since the last twenty years. So, to me, it becomes some kind of a truth, because it does not change. And that which does not change is, Truth.

Now, extend this example to include the entire universe. The Moon and the Sun have not changed in the last twenty years. So, to me, they become – truth. The names of my relationships have hardly changed over the last twenty years, so to me they become – truth. And there are so many things that do not change in my little life-time. And so, it becomes intuitive for me to consider them as the – truth, when actually they are not the truth.

Now, you have taken some drug. And now, the wall, which was till now white and standing, now becomes a rainbow, and is dancing. The standing, white wall has become a dancing rainbow. And you are actually experiencing it. You are experiencing that the wall is a rainbow, that is, dancing, because you are under the influence of LSD.

So, of at least one thing you come to know – that experiences are deceptive. And the wall has no objective reality. The wall is, as you see it. You come to know of that, that the wall is not the truth.

The whiteness of the wall was in my eyes, was in my mind rather. And my mind changed under the influence of the drugs, and now see that the wall is a rainbow. And the wall appeared stationary and standing, just because my mind appeared it that way.

Now that the mind has changed, because the brain is under the influence of stuff, so the wall has started dancing. So, this much you can infer – that the usual universe that you perceive, is not the Truth.

But, a great danger arises. Now you start thinking that the rainbow is the truth. And if the rainbow is the truth, so you want to be with the truth all the time. So, you want to be with drugs all the time. Because you have an unflinching desire for truth, you see.

The white wall was the truth until now. And if that truth is gone, you quickly want some other truth. The position of Truth cannot remain vacant. The white wall gone, now the rainbow is the truth.

It is not at all a very useful method. You are negating one thing acceptable, right? You have negated the whiteness of the wall, but you have substituted it with something more problematic.

The world is a habit, but drugs are a worst habit. At least when you are free of drugs, then you can look at the facts. Under the influence of drugs, you cannot even know the facts. And I have repeatedly said that – the facts are the door to Truth.

If you do not know even the facts, then you are one step further away from the Truth.

The one who is finding refuge in drugs, is fed up of the usual stuff of consciousness. That is certain. But, he is taking a very wasteful route. It’s like feeling cold in Delhi in the month of December, and wanting to escape away, and so you go to Shimla. That kind of wisdom

“Darling we must go somewhere. It’s freezing cold in Delhi.” So darling books the flight to Srinagar. That’s the kind of wisdom contained in using drugs for spiritual attainment.

Do not try to be aware in ‘some’ situations || Acharya Prashant (2018)

awareness(To receive regular updates on WhatsApp regarding wisdom articles by Acharya Ji and to get an opportunity to connect to him directly, click here)

Questioner: What does it really mean to be passively aware in day-to-day life? Whenever someone tries to hit me personally, the reaction happens. But the realization that the personality is defending is not instantaneous. So, how to maintain awareness in such instances, when one feels personally attacked?

Acharya Prashant: Aparajita is saying she wants to maintain awareness in instances when she is attacked. And should I read it to mean that you do not want to maintain awareness, in instances, when you are the attacker? If you can get the incompleteness of your question, you will realize why awareness eludes you.

Awareness is in total so you cannot get it in half. You want to remain aware only in moments of crisis. You want awareness to help you out, only when you are attacked. But when you are enjoying all kinds of pleasures, then you do not want awareness, do you?

When pain hits you, then you cry out awareness, awareness. But in your moments of pleasure, you forget all about Ashtavakra, Rumi, and Acharya Ji. You say, ‘Now, we are anyway happy and aim of all spirituality is to give happiness, so why do we now need spiritual help?’

You are wrong, Aparajita.

Spirituality is not about happiness. Spirituality is not about relief from pain. Spirituality, before it ameliorates your pain, does away with your pleasures.

How to live as pure consciousness? || Acharya Prashant (2018)

pure

(To receive regular updates on WhatsApp regarding wisdom articles by Acharya Ji and to get an opportunity to connect to him directly, click here)

Question: Acharya Ji,

Naman!

I read Ashtavakra and surprisingly, my mind quickly and completely accepted the idea that I am pure consciousness and that I don’t need to do anything to get enlightened. However, someone inside me knows that this is the mind’s game to show acceptance to Ashtavakra’s theory. Ashtavakra Gita is a sacred knowledge. However I am confused, as to how to live like pure consciousness in non-duality, not like a doer?

Acharya Prashant: If you will look at your question, you will realise why what you are asking, is impossible to get. You are saying that you want to live like pure consciousness. Right?

One can want to live like the beetles one day, one can want to live like Ramkrishna Paramhans, the next day and then Pele, the third day. Many of us think that spirituality is the best mask we can put on our face. We have spent all our life, wearing and changing masks and now you want to put on another one, which has been called as the purest, eternal, final, most hallowed one. And obviously, the most respectable one, the mask of the spiritual one, the one who is pure consciousness.

It just doesn’t occurred to you, does it that it is not necessarily to wear masks. It not even strikes us. Even the possibility doesn’t appear to us. Right? The best that we can think for us is a mask. Not that we are trying to do bad to ourselves, we want the good to happen. But that’s our utmost conception of the good. Right? The best mask. We say that’s the best that can happen to us.  I will give up the old masks and put on new ones. We are so, very under-ambitious. We even don’t desire beyond a point. And our self-worth is so compromised, that the best we can hope for ourselves is a better version of rags. It’s sad to see this.

Ashtavakra is not about you starting to live like pure consciousness. Ashtavakra is just a reminder to you, that you have the ability to see, what is impure,  corrupted, and unconscious about you. Pure consciousness is not something that you can put upon yourself. Pure consciousness is your very root. It is your center. It is not the last wheel on your periphery. It is not the loose cloak that will conceal all the other garments that you are wearing. It is your very center, it is your heart beneath all garments.

‘I’ will not live like pure consciousness, ‘I’ has to be seen as unnecessary, not just declared, it has to be seen as unnecessary. There is a difference between just mundanely making a declaration and actually, consciously seeing something as needless.
