Self-knowledge is an empowerment

Self-knowledge would mean, being conscious of the actions of the body and the thoughts of the mind. Knowing what do I do and what do I think.

All this is ‘Self-knowledge.’ Watching your actions and watching your thoughts.

‘Self-knowledge’ is a process of reduction. It’s a process of inhalation. It is also called Neti-Neti. The more you see, the more you realize it’s falseness.

Self-knowledge means that the more you know ‘yourself,’ the less you see that what you call yourself is ‘your’ ‘self.’ It is not your self at all. It is a puppet, a machine.

Self-awareness is the vast empty sky that remains after all the dust, dirt, haziness and clouds have been removed.

Before you ask for ‘self-awareness,’ ask for ‘self-knowledge.’ ‘Self-knowledge’ is also called as ‘self-consciousness.’

That is what is an absence of ‘Self-consciousness.’ We do not know what we are doing.

Self-knowledge is empowermentgreat empowerment.

Acharya Prashant: What is self-awareness?

Question: Acharya Ji, what does it mean to be ‘self-aware?’

Acharya Prashant: What does it mean to be self-aware? For this, we have to go first into ‘self-knowledge.’ Knowledge of the ‘self’ and awareness of the ‘self.’ We will have to take these two together. What is ‘self?’ Simple, the ‘self’ that which we call as ‘me,’ ‘I.’

What’s your name?

Listener: Acharya Ji, Dev.

AP: So, for Dev, ‘self’ is Dev, right? Self-knowledge would simply mean, “knowing that what this Dev thing is all about.” A very basic start. What is this creature called ‘Dev?’ Self-knowledge means, “Dev is a body and Dev is a mind. Dev acts and Dev thinks. The body acts and the mind thinks.”

So,

Self-knowledge would mean, being conscious of the actions of the body and the thoughts of the mind.

Knowing what do I do and what do I think.

The brain is not intelligent, but it is the seat of intelligence.

Identifying with the brain is deeply problematic, but realizing that I am that intelligence which just sits upon the brain, that is beautiful. That awareness that I am not identifying with all the identities, conditioning, all the external influences, and I realize myself to be intelligent, that’s one thing.

On one hand Yes, all that the brain has, has come from the outside, it is external, and please don’t identify with that. Beliefs, religion, meanings of words like success, life, work, love – all these have been given to us and the brain has just soaked them in like a sponge. And that is what is the process of conditioning. The development of Ego. If you become identified with all that, then you have become mechanical. So, that has to be alertly avoided. That first part, it has to be understood. And in understanding it, you have ordained it.

But the second thing is very very precious, and what is that second? That intelligence. That’s what you are. That’s what you are. And that intelligence also requires the presence of a healthy brain. Remember we said that if our brains are smashed, there is no question of an intelligent output. So, the brain must be healthy just as the seat of intelligence. The brain is not intelligent, but it is the seat of intelligence. The brain by itself is very very dumb, very very dumb. All it can do is take orders, and that also not your order, someone else’s orders. The brain by itself is very very dumb, all it can be is a database. a storehouse reservoir of data, of memories, are you getting it? And it is also preprogrammed. So, its a database and a programme. Both of which make a slave out of it. But it’s also the seat of intelligence.

Is your mind really yours?

Question: How do I call this brain my own if this is nothing but a collection of experiences from the past and influences from the outside?

Acharya Prashant: Me and my brain must be called as two different entities. Right? This question surely wouldn’t have been in your mind a month back, today it is there because you have come to see that the brain is nothing but a collection of all your past experiences. The brain is nothing but a product of evolution and it has all the information that life has gone through, has gathered in the course of these million years of being and becoming. Continue reading

Will donating my body parts help me in the afterlife?

Question: Donating body parts will really have any meaning in after life; negative or positive?

Acharya Prashant: What’s your name?

L: Anubhav

AP: Anubhav is asking, will donating body parts help me in the afterlife or help someone else in afterlife, in whatever way?

The question is, ‘Do we know this life?’ We are talking about afterlife as if life itself is very clear and intimate to us. We do not know this life but we are so very interested in other life, in some other world. Do you know life? When are you thinking of afterlife? Right now in this life. Do you know this life? What do you mean by afterlife and why must the mind jump to the thought of the afterlife? Continue reading

Your best is expressed only in Joy

Question:  Is it always true that a man or a woman will give their best performance due to pressure only?

Acharya Prashant: No, who said that?

The question is, ‘Is it true that we give our best performance only under pressure?’

Not at all. On the contrary, pressure brings the worst out of you. It is the bad bad education that teaches you that pressure is important.

All pressure is violence, all pressure is a torture, a distortion of the mind. The mind is being pushed by an external factor.

But what happens is — I understand from the way you are coming — what happens is, when the mind is deeply conditioned for a long period of time, it loses its internal capacity to see, to move freely. It becomes like a car whose engine in spite of being beautifully designed has become dysfunctional because of disuse.

A beautifully designed engine will not work, if you do not use it for ten years, twenty years. Will it work? It may be the best engine in the world. The same is the case with the mind. Our mind is a beautifully designed machine. It’s an instrument of the highest order, an instrument that man cannot make. But because of conditioning, we do not use the mind, instead we start using memory. Using the mind means, application of intelligence but our education is such that we substitute intelligence with memory, then the mind become dysfunctional. Continue reading

Mind is just a machine; just honestly see where your Heart is

Never complain about the mind.

Mind is just a machine; just honestly see where your Heart is.

I am repeating: If the Heart is rightly placed, it will guide the mind on its own.

You can leave the mind free to go anywhere. The mind will know where to go and where not to go.

Be careful about the essentials and forget the trivial.

Take care of the One and forget the many.

Take care of the basic essential and forget the rest, it will be alright on its own.
