You must be a temple dweller, who acts as the householder also

Your observations in the world, will never, never bring you to the Truth. Forget about the Truth, your observations will not even reveal the facts to you, if you do not start off with a clear mind.

I do not know who said it, but he said it beautifully, “We are not material beings, having spiritual experiences. We are spiritual beings having material experiences.”

That sums it up. You are both. The difference lies in seeing what you fundamentally are, what is the core and what is the gloss, what is the Truth and what is the manifestation of the Truth. You are both. But you must figure out, what you principally, primarily, fundamentally are.

You are not a Householder who can sometimes go to the temple. You must be a temple dweller, who acts as the householder also.

The worldly man says, “I live in a house and sometimes I go to the temple. The wise man says, “I live in the temple and acts sometimes as if I am a householder.” The worldly man gets neither the house, his house is full of stress and strife. Neither does he get the temple, as his temple is fake. The wise man gets both – the temple and the house. His temple is his house, his house is his temple.

And that gives you a hint. Is your temple, away from your house? Then you would be suffering, both in the house and in the temple. Then both are fake.

And this is one of the deepest errors that mankind has made. It has made temples, churches, and mosques, as separate and special places. Till the time, there is a house, there is a workplace, there is a marketplace and there is a temple; there would be confusion, separation, frustration and suffering in the house, workplace and marketplace, and in the temple. These two must be one. For the wise man, these two cannot be separate. And when these two are one, the wise man says, “I belong to the temple, which is also my house. He will not say that my house is my temple.

He knows that, fundamentally, he is ‘of the temple’. He is acting as if he is in the house. Not that he does not take up house related work, he does. But if you will ask him what is your primary identity, he will say “I am a temple dweller. He will not say I am a householder.” Though, I am repeating, though his temple and house are one. He could have easily said, that I am a householder and my house is my temple. No. He would say, “I am a temple dweller and the temple is also my house.”

And this creates all the difference.

What is your primary identity?

“Who are you?” That question must be rightly answered.

Who are you?

Begin in Truth, and roam about in the world

“Do your duties in the world and also fix your mind on the Lotus feet of the Lord”

“You are like ‘Elder, the pumpkin cutter’. You are neither a man of the world nor a devotee of God”

~The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna

Acharya Prashant: We are referring to a man. A man is, flesh and blood. And a man is consciousness. You could say that on one end of man’s consciousness, lies flesh and blood, and on the other end, lies real living, realization, understanding, ecstasy, love. And man is both, rolled into one. On the end where man is flesh and blood, there is a primitive spell of conditioning. At the end, where man is realization and understanding, there is complete freedom – Freedom from conditioning and Freedom Absolute.

Man will always think and feel that he is one of these two ends and the other end will be a function of what he thinks and feels about himself. For example, if you deeply feel that you are flesh and blood, then you would still experience a void in your life. A general sense of dissatisfaction will be there. There would be something, that the mind would ask for, would chase. This, that the mind would ask for, this that the mind would chase, would be the God of this flesh and blood man. But because he has already thought of himself as flesh and blood, so this God too will be just flesh and blood. And sometimes, this, that he is chasing, he won’t even call it God.

The real can never be taken away

Wherever there is the other, wherever there is dependence on the other, there is fear and hence a search for safety.

Are you getting this?

I’m dependent upon the industry for my self-worth. Let them come and give me a job that makes me feel safe, right? And not just one job offer, I want to have two. One in hand, one in pocket. Now you’re dependent, severely dependent. How am I looking? I depend on somebody else to approve my looks. You’re playing safe. So, whosoever advocates safety, is first and foremost a man who is afraid. Because the real need not be saved. The real is never threatened. Only the unreal, the borrowed stuff is threatened.

The real can never be taken away. Never. No one can take it away from you. What can be taken away is anyway borrowed. Let it go. What was never yours, what is the point in protecting? What was never yours need not be protected, and what is yours can never be taken away. So, all fear is stupidity. No point playing safe. That does not mean that I am asking you to go and stand in front of a moving bus. I’m saying, “Be situated in your essential nature.” Don’t be trembling all the time. Let the feeling that some loss is going to happen not trouble you all the time.

How important is not ‘playing safe’ in life?

Listener: Sir, how important is not playing safe in life?

Acharya Prashant: How important is it to not to play safe. What’s your name?

L: Bilal.

AP: Bilal. What are you trying to secure? When you say that there is something that needs safety, what am I trying to save? What is it that demands protection? Only something that demands protection needs to be saved, am I right? Is that not obvious?

What are you looking for?

21762214_1227353527370622_921021697824714700_n

Question: If I am honest, all the time I am looking for something, I don’t know why, or what. And I don’t feel good with that feeling, because all the time we are looking for outside. And I don’t know what I want to do or what I want? If you ask me that, I don’t have any idea. I don’t know what I am looking for. I want to be in peace only.

Acharya Prashant: You see, the question that we normally consider is – “What am I looking for?” In this question, the assumption is that there surely is something that I am looking for, that there exists something that I am looking for; the belief that something out there exists that I really want and that will really satisfy my thirst, my desire. So, the assumed challenge is to figure out what am I looking for.

But we never consider the question, whether I am looking for something?

We ask, “What do I want?” We do not ask, “Whether I want anything.” Do I really want it? Continue reading

Knowledge is always stale

You stand in front of the mirror, who looks at the image? You! And who is there in the image? You!

You project and you look. The world is like this. Getting it? That is why, the ones who realize, I have repeatedly said that knowledge is always stale. There can be no real newness in knowledge. You can never really have knowledge of that, which is outside your most fundamental conditioning. You can never read a CD that you have not been programmed to read. Now the contents of the CD might vary. Understand this.

But your hardware is programmed to read only particular type of CDs. That CD can have any kind of content. Now, the real new is not the knowledge. The real new is something else. The real new is a sense of freshness within, not dependent on any kind of mental activity. The ones who depend on knowledge end up getting bored. So, they keep giving themselves more and more knowledge based inputs. And when I am saying ‘knowledge’, I mean the aggregate of all sensory inputs.

So, to get rid of the boredom, they keep feeding themselves more and more sensory inputs and yet the boredom never goes away. The reason is simple. Whatever you are feeding to yourself, you have fed it a thousand times earlier. So, it cannot remove your boredom.

You have seen the movie a thousand times earlier. the name of the movie might have changed. Apparently, the story line has also changed. But, it’s the same thing -same attraction, same violence, same suspense, same murder, same killing. Alright! Different names of the characters. Alright! Different faces of the characters. But the fundamentals are the same, the hard-wiring is the same. So, even if you watch a fresh movie, a so called fresh movie, you still emerge from the theater, long faced and bored. There is no freshness in it. The same old drama, attraction, repulsion, coming close, going away, anxiety, happiness, sadness, relief, responsibilities, obligations, pressure, revolt; Same things!

Because my system is the same!

You see, if you paint your face in a thousand ways, and go and look at yourself in the mirror. But will you ever be able to deceive yourself that the man you are looking at, is you? After all, you are projecting it, so, how can it be new? Getting it?

The more you search, the more you will not find

As long as a scholar makes a search or an investigation, so long that is indeed not met with, since it is not at all graspable.

Hemlekha

~THE ESSENCE OF TRIPURA RAHASYA (verse 64)

Acharya Prashant: So, keep searching and you will not find it. Because that, which is to be found, is found only in stillness. The more you search, the more you ensure that you will not find it. Then does that mean that we should not search for it? No! You must search for it. Why?

Now, get this point very-very clearly! Why should you search for it?

Because searching is your habit!

You are anyway searching for a thousand things. Get this very clearly. Why must self-inquiry be done? Why must searching take place? Because you are curious about a thousand things. Had you not been curious at all, self-enquiry would not have been needed. But, you are curious. You want to know. Your senses are looking for knowledge all the time. Because you cannot do without knowledge, hence it is advised that why don’t you go to the root of knowledge and inquire into the absolute. Continue reading
