Work is life. Out of the fourteen or fifteen hours in a day, when you would not be sleeping, when you would not be doing your daily tasks, you would be spending the majority of your time working. So, if I am awake, fifteen sixteen hours a day, out of that twelve hours or fourteen hours are going to be spent in work-related activities. Do you see this? I am going to spend seventy percent to eighty percent of my life working. Do you see this?
Work is life itself. Work is the most important, most dominant overwhelming component of your life, it will take away all your time. Work is life. And if you do not love your work, then actually you will hate life. Because work is life. You cannot approach work using these considerations, salary, stability, these are very small, very trivial considerations. Have you come across a word called ‘Calling’? Calling means the work that calls out to you. A work that beckons you, that says “come, it’s so loving, Its so attractive, you want to do it” You want to do it, even if you are not paid anything. You say High salary, I am saying “Choose the work that you would do even without getting any salary”.
Imagine what kind of work that would be which you are ready to do even without being paid? Now, if that work can be your life, then life is beautiful. If that work can be your life, then life is beautiful. And only such work deserves to be your life. Only such work deserves to be taken up. You must find out your calling. You must find out what really beckons you.
Question: Sir, What is more, important for a fresher, big fat salary, or a stable job?
Acharya Prashant: Neither. What’s your name?
Listener1: Acharya Ji, Taranjay.
AP: Taranjay is asking “What is more important for a fresher, a good salary or a stable job?” Neither. A good salary implies accumulation, A stable job implies fear – “What if this job goes away? What will happen to me?”

One should identify Brahman neither with the head nor with the middle part nor with the bottom but with (what remains in the shape of) the tail, since it is said that Brahman is ‘the Tail’ and substratum. Thus those who contemplate this fourfold division attain the supreme Goal.
Acharya Prashant: Brahman is to be identified with no part of the body but with the tail. What is meant by that? The idea is that the tail has only one function-to give stability. Brahman is the stabilizing tail of the universe. All other parts of the body have various utilities and functions. But the tail gives stability. Continue reading →
Understanding comes first, then come thoughts. This may sound strange, because conventionally we have been trained to use thought as a tool to understand. That is felicitous. First comes understanding, then comes thought. The purpose of thought is not to understand but to give a language to understanding. Thought can never help you understand. The purpose of thought is to articulate. That is why thought and language necessarily go together. Thought can at best articulate your understanding and that is a genuine function of thought, genuine function!
You already know but conscious mind proceeds on language. So thought will help you put in consciousness what you know. Are you getting this? Thought will help you put in your consciousness what you know. That does not mean that without thought you will not know. You will still know. But as a conscious mind, you will have nothing to claim as your are knowing. Are you getting this? Thought does not help you understand. Thought helps you claim that you understand. And sometimes that claim is needed, in the field of consciousness that claim is needed!
Man has this ability, a very unfortunate ability to come to a temporary stability in an unstable equilibrium.
Experience is the only way. One thing with conditioning is that, it cannot bear exposure to fact. All kinds of conditioning thrive only in environment suitable to them. And if they are expose to environments that their underlined assumptions do not allow, then conditioning collapses.
You deliberately confine yourself in environments that are suitable, conducive to your views about the world.
That is how people continue to remain conditioned for long periods of time. They will just not allow any dangerous experience to touch them. They will just not allow news of other world to reach them.
Come in touch with people, life, experiences that lies outside the rigmarole of your daily living. If you continue to live within your four walls, you will continue to be the prisoner of those four walls then your identity cannot change. Experiencing, touching, feeling, smelling, travelling – that is why they have a great importance. You come to see that, which violates your prejudices. You’re compelled to confront that, which does not match with your assumptions. When you are compelled to confront that which does not match your assumptions, what happens to your assumptions?
Question: I believe that I like the ability to trust people. I like I found myself trying to flirt with fake as I say. There are times when I find myself desiring or trying or making a very good effort to be in faith and then there will be time and suddenly I’ll be put off completely. But that was my past. But this is something that I feel now that I probably like the ability to trust people. I don’t know what to do about it? Whether I should trust people or pay attention to it or not? I don’t even know what to do with it.
AP:Man has this ability, a very unfortunate ability to come to a temporary stability in an unstable equilibrium.Because you come from an engineering background so I use this example. You can have a chemical which is unstable but is not coming in contact with something to react with. Now, it can conveniently remain isolated, secured, in its own high energy unstable position. Right? It can remain so for years, for decades, for a lifetime. Now, how does that chemical gain a more stable, more peaceful, a low energy equilibrium? How? Continue reading →
